Ambassador of Australia Dennis Richardson, presides over the opening bell to celebrate his visit to New York City.
Dennis Richardson was named Australian Ambassador to the United States in June 2005. Prior to his posting in Washington, D.C., he held various positions in the Australian Government, including Director-General of the Australian Security and Intelligence Organisation (1996-2005), Deputy Secretary of the Department of Immigration and Ethnic Affairs (1992-96), and Principal Private Secretary to Prime Minister Bob Hawke (1990-91). He also served in the then Department of Foreign Affairs from 1969-86, with diplomatic postings in Nairobi, Kenya; Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea; and Jakarta, Indonesia. Ambassador Richardson earned a B.A. with Honors from Sydney University in 1968 and was awarded an Order of Australia (AO) in 2003.
