Ray Gerald, President of Associated Black Charities presides over the closing bell.

Associated Black Charities' mission is to promote the delivery of quality health and human services to New York's African American community. Founded 21 years ago, ABC is a federation of 14 community-based health and human services agencies that serve more than 175,000 clients annually.

The primary purpose and task of the organization is fundraising on behalf of its member agencies. In addition to financial assistance, ABC secures management and technical assistance for its members.

ABC plans to launch KITA, (Knowledge, Insurance, Treatment, and Advocacy), a new initiative to promote preventive health programs and healthy lifestyles. KITA is also expected to expand access to healthcare and health insurance, and to stimulate an increase in the quality of healthcare delivered to disadvantaged New Yorkers. KITA's launch stems from both the substantial lack of access to healthcare among disadvantaged and growing disparities between the quality of healthcare delivered to the disadvantaged in New York City versus that delivered to majority New Yorkers. Finally, KITA intends to educate and promote constructive dialogue among public and corporate officials and the community at large through organizing and convening seminars and conferences, publications, and other forums about health and human service issues affecting the community.
