Award winning Actress, Marlo Thomas, National Outreach Director for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital and Donald J. Germano, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Kmart Stores, presides over the closing bell to kick off the 3rd annual Thanks and Giving holiday campaign, a national retail and marketing program which asks consumers to "Give Thanks For The Healthy Kids In Your Lives And Give To Those Who Are Not."
Eighty Four cents of every dollar received goes to research and treatment at St. Jude that is saving children's lives in every community in the country. The campaign starts the day after Thanksgiving and continues through the holidays. Also joining Marlo will be St. Jude patients benefiting from the life-saving discoveries and treatments.
St. Jude Children's Research Hospital is internationally recognized for its pioneering work in finding cures and saving children with cancer and other catastrophic diseases. Founded by late entertainer Danny Thomas, St. Jude immediately and freely shares its discoveries with scientific and medical communities around the world. No family ever pays for treatments not covered by insurance, and families without insurance are never asked to pay. St. Jude pays for costs of travel, food and lodging for every patient and a parent. Eighty-four cents of every dollar St. Jude receives goes to research and treatment. St. Jude pioneered treatment for the most common form of leukemia that has brought the survival rate from 4 percent in 1962 to more than 90 percent today. St. Jude recently discovered a way to lessen side effects, making radiation treatment more effective for virtually all cancers. St Jude is financially supported by ALSAC, its fund-raising organization. For more information, please visit www.stjude.org.
