Dr. David D. Pendergast, executive vice president and general manager of Shire plc, presides over the closing bell. Dr. Pendergast oversees operations at Shire Human Genetic Therapies, the Shire specialty unit focused specifically on genetic diseases.
M&A activity for Shire during the last several years has resulted in six completed acquisitions, and they have plans to launch five products in 2006, including, ELAPRASE, which if approved by regulators, will be the first human enzyme replacement therapy for the treatment of Hunter syndrome, also known as Mucopolysaccharidosis II (MPS II), a rare genetic disorder.
