The Food Bank For New York City, a member of America's Second Harvest, The Nation's Food Bank Network, and the only food bank in the city, was founded in 1983 to coordinate the procurement and distribution of food donations from manufacturers, wholesalers, retailers and government agencies to organizations providing free food to the city's hungry. Today, the Food Bank is the major supplier of food to more than 1,200 community food programs across the five boroughs, distributing enough food to serve more than 250,000 free meals served each day to New Yorkers in need.
