The American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages will preside over the opening bell. On February 17, 2005, the U.S. Senate designated 2005 as The Year of Languages, (SR-28), which recognizes the growing importance of foreign language learning for children and adults. Currently, American business executives rank far behind executives from other nations in language skills. In the Netherlands, the average business executive speaks 3.9 languages, compared to the U.S., where the average executive speaks 1.4 languages.
The importance of language skills for executives in the global financial community will be underscored by having a small group of language teachers and students -- from New York and other parts of the country -- open the NASDAQ market at MarketSite.
