Windows 7 poised to outpace Apple's Mac OS in market share

Windows 7 poised to outpace Apple's Mac OS in market share Just over a month after its introduction, Microsoft's (NASDAQ: MSFT) Windows 7 operating system is on the verge of surpassing Apple's (NASDAQ: AAPL) Mac operating system in market share, according to research firm Net Applications.

Last weekend, the company says, Windows 7 computers made up 5.07 percent of all internet traffic. That puts Redmond's new system just slightly ahead of Mac, which had 5 percent of the market for the week of November 15-21. Windows 7 only had 4.15 percent of web traffic during that week, but Net Applications executive vice president Vince Vizzaccaro suggested that it won't be long until the new OS takes the lead permanently.

"Certainly, the trend line shows Windows 7 will surpass Mac share soon," Vizzaccaro said to Computerworld magazine.

Net Applications' data indicates that Windows 7 has gained steady traction in the market since its release on October 22. Its market share rose from 2.7 percent in week one to 3.3 percent in the second week. The OS had 3.7 percent share in week three and 4 percent the week after.

Windows 7 has garnered praise from computer experts and industry analysts. Microsoft's previous operating system Vista was derided for being sluggish and bloated, and the company attempted to address those and other concerns with Windows 7.
