Nvidia CEO speaks in Dubai, showers praise on Apple

Nvidia CEO speaks in Dubai, showers praise on Apple In remarks at the American University of Dubai, Nvidia (NASDAQ: NVDA) CEO and cofounder Jen-Hsun Huang discussed future applications of his company's graphics processing unit (GPU) technology.

GPUs are best-known for their role in computer gaming. They render three-dimensional images more effectively than the CPUs that power electronic devices; for this reason, GPUs are used in gaming consoles, smartphones and computers. But, said Huang, they are increasingly being used "to simulate real-world environments much faster and in greater detail."

He noted GPUs' applicability in "oil and gas exploration, breast cancer detection, climate modeling and cloud computing." Huang cited a desire to expand research partnerships with Middle Eastern universities as a reason for his visit and invited students to apply for the Nvidia Fellowship Program. The program, now in its ninth year, awards $25,000 to projects that can make significant advances in high-performance computing.

Huang also mentioned his fervor for Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL) products; Nvidia provides GPUs to the entire Apple MacBook line of laptop computers and many Apple desktops. Talking about his own taste in computers, Huang enthused that "it's just Mac, Mac, Mac!"

Thanks to increased demand for its chips, Nvidia reported better-than-expected third-quarter profits last week.
