Microsoft number one in website visits, data shows

Microsoft number one in website visits, data shows Digital research provider comScore reports that Microsoft's (NASDAQ: MSFT) websites were the world's most popular in September, led by the company's Windows Live Messenger service.

Google (NASDAQ: GOOG), Yahoo (NASDAQ: YHOO), and Facebook had the second-, third- and fourth-most visited sites, comScore says.

Windows Live Messenger, an instant messaging client, allows its users to chat and transfer files. Seventy percent of the 3.9 billion website visits that Microsoft had in September were from Messenger users, many of whom were outside North America. Microsoft had the most-viewed sites in Europe, Latin America and the Middle East and Africa.

Yahoo sites were tops in North America, comScore notes.

But the company's data indicates that Facebook is coming on strong. While internet users only spent 1.4 billion hours on the social networking site, its year-on-year popularity growth was close to 200 percent. In April, Facebook reported that users uploaded as many as 550,000 pictures every second.

Overall internet use increased 23 percent between September 2008 and September 2009. Jack Flanagan, executive vice president of comScore's Media Metrix, said that the internet "continues to be a dynamic and growing environment around the world."
