Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL) announced on Wednesday that the 100,000th app had been developed for its line of iPhones and iPods.
The two devices are extraordinarily popular among consumers. The latest iPhone model, the 3GS, sold better than Apple and analysts expected during the summer; sales of the iPod Touch were twice their year-ago numbers.
Cupertino, California-based Apple reported 7.4 million iPhone sales in its fourth quarter, ahead of analyst expectations. The company sold 10.2 million iPods, as well.
Apple's Wednesday announcement noted new app features: "Genius for Apps, App Store Essentials selections, sub category listings and more valuable customer reviews." Over two billion apps have been downloaded from the App Store, Apple's app repository, since July 2008. The company's latest announcement puts it well ahead of competing smartphone operating systems like Palm OS, RIM's (NASDAQ: RIMM) BlackBerry, and Google's (NASDAQ: GOOG) Android.
Palm (NASDAQ: PALM) has about 300 apps available for its latest phone, the Pre. There are approximately 10,000 apps available for Android.
The market reacted well to Apple's better-than-expected sales - and profits - two weeks ago. And Fortune magazine recently lauded Apple CEO Steve Jobs as "CEO of the decade."
