In Focus: New Apple launch in the pipeline?

New Apple launch in the pipeline? There is speculation that Apple could be about to unveil an updated line of its iPod mp3 players after the technology firm issued teaser invites for a special event in California later this month.

While it is anyone's guess exactly what the firm has lined up, many Apple observers believe a new or redesigned line of the media players could be on the way ahead of the holiday season.

Invitations for the event, which is being held on September 9th, featured a silhouetted figure similar to the ones used in early iPod ads, along with the simple legend "Let's rock".

Joshua Martin, an analyst with independent technology research specialist the Yankee Group, told MacNewsWorld: "All indications point to a new iPod. It's the time of year. All the blogs are buzzing about it, and the device does need an update."

He added that if Apple is planning to unveil refreshed iPod design, it will have to go further than previous updates, calling for more Wi-Fi capabilities and greater social networking functions.

Other rumors center on the possibility that Apple could launch a new, touchscreen tablet version of its Mac computer.

In other launch news, this week saw Google officially unveil its own open source web browser, Chrome.
