Highlights
Wholesale trade inventories rose 0.8 percent in September, below a 1.3 percent rise in sales to pull down the inventory-to-sales ratio one tenth to a record low of 1.10. The September gain was posted against a sharply upward revised inventory gain in August of 0.7 percent. Inventories were held back by a steep 1.5% decline in petroleum stocks but were boosted by a big month-to-month jump of 4.1 percent in auto inventories, the most in two years and a gain likely tied to strike-related production troubles in August. Factory inventories for September rose a 0.6 percent with retail inventories to be released mid-week next week.
