Highlights
The quarterly services report offers a look at employment services revenue and in turn information on the labor market. Employment services revenue rose a sharp 4.9 percent in the fourth quarter vs. the third quarter but the gain is unadjusted. The adjustment's important because of the holidays and high demand for temporary labor. Year-on-year, employment services revenue was up 6.0 percent, no better than moderate but above the third quarter's 4.4 percent rate. Payroll growth in February was also moderate but other data in the report showed plenty of strength, at odds perhaps with elevated jobless claims, soft retail sales and an uncertain housing market.
