Housing Market Index
Definition
The National Association of Home Builders produces a housing market index based on a survey in which respondents from this organization are asked to rate the general economy and housing market conditions. The housing market index is a weighted average of separate diffusion indexes: present sales of new homes, sale of new homes expected in the next six months, and traffic of prospective buyers in new homes. Released on 9/16/08 For Sep 2008
Housing Market Index
 Actual 18
 Previous 16

Highlights
New confidence in future sales gave an important boost to the home builders' housing market index which posted a rare 2 point gain in September -- but to a still very weak level of 18. The index for sales six months out jumped 6 points to 30 with present sales and buyer traffic both rising 1 point yet still near 15. Next week existing home sales and new home sales will be released, reports that will shape the assessment of the housing market and perhaps the outlook for the banking system. Markets showed no reaction to today's report which of course precedes the 2:15 p.m. ET statement from the FOMC.
