Housing Market Index
Definition
The National Association of Home Builders produces a housing market index based on a survey in which respondents from this organization are asked to rate the general economy and housing market conditions. The housing market index is a weighted average of separate diffusion indexes: present sales of new homes, sale of new homes expected in the next six months, and traffic of prospective buyers in new homes. Released on 1/17/07 For Jan 2007
Housing Market Index
 Actual 35
 Previous 32

Highlights
The worst may be past for the housing market as the NAHB housing market index popped up 3 points in January to 35 and is now 5 points higher than its September low of 30. The report said builders are responding to increased interest from buyers. The good news was underscored at the 1:00 p.m. ET release time by headlines from Federal Reserve Governor Frederic Mishkin who said no special monetary policy response is necessary to help the housing market. Today's bounce will help boost confidence for December's housing data including tomorrow's housing starts report.
