Highlights
Challenger's layoff count for August is 88,736, down from July's 103,312 and up from 79,459 in August last year. Layoff announcements from May through August were the highest since the jobless recovery of 2002. Layoffs in the latest month were centered in autos and government. This report won't affect expectations for Friday's employment report, unlike tomorrow's ADP report.

Trends
|
The Challenger Job-Cut Report could serve as a leading indicator for new jobless claims. However, not all layoff announcements result in near term job losses. For instance, companies often announce layoffs that will result in job losses but not immediately. Companies would simply not replace workers who quit voluntarily. |
