Definition

Released on 8/1/07 For Jul 2007
Announced Layoffs - Level
 Actual 42,897
 Previous 55,726

Highlights
More and more, indications are rising that the job market is tightening. Challenger's layoff count totaled a thin 42,879 in July, a 12-month low and down from 55,726 in June. Layoffs were centered in transportation, electronics and retail. There was a huge spike in hiring intentions to 200,067, but the total was skewed by a survey which found that the federal government, needing to replace retired workers and needing to add to homeland security, will add 193,000 jobs through 2009. ADP's payroll count will be out at 8:15 a.m. ET.

Trends
[Chart] The Challenger Job-Cut Report could serve as a leading indicator for new jobless claims. However, not all layoff announcements result in near term job losses. For instance, companies often announce layoffs that will result in job losses but not immediately. Companies would simply not replace workers who quit voluntarily.
