Highlights
Announced layoffs fell back sharply in March in what may be a positive sign for Friday's big payroll report. Challenger's count totaled 48,997 in March, well down from 84,014 in February and 64,975 in March 2006. In fact the latest total is among the very lowest of the last several years. ADP later this morning will offer the next teaser on the jobs market.

Trends
|
The Challenger Job-Cut Report could serve as a leading indicator for new jobless claims. However, not all layoff announcements result in near term job losses. For instance, companies often announce layoffs that will result in job losses but not immediately. Companies would simply not replace workers who quit voluntarily. |
