Chain Store Sales
Definition
Monthly sales volumes from individual department, chain, discount, and apparel stores are usually reported on the first Thursday of each month. Chain store sales correspond with roughly 10 percent of retail sales. Chain store sales are an indicator of retail sales and consumer spending trends.  Why Investors Care

Highlights
Chain stores sales were once again weak in October, though perhaps no weaker than September. Chains on average posted same-store growth at just over zero with total sales growth at about 3%. These rates are roughly one half percentage point below September. But very few chains are cutting estimates, unlike this time last month when a wave of chains were cutting estimates. Complaints over low traffic are common as are expectations for heavy promotions during the holidays. But chains are sounding more upbeat on the holidays than would be suggested by recent results. Today's results, together with the month's soft vehicle sales, point to a soft retail trade report on Wednesday.
