Chain Store Sales
Definition
Monthly sales volumes from individual department, chain, discount, and apparel stores are usually reported on the first Thursday of each month. Chain store sales correspond with roughly 10 percent of retail sales. Chain store sales are an indicator of retail sales and consumer spending trends.  Why Investors Care

Highlights
Chain stores reported no better than flat results in July, hurt by what many describe as a "difficult" consumer environment. Wal-Mart was typical, showing same-store growth of only 1.9 percent that was down from 2.4 percent in June. Some chains blamed a later back-to-school season for the month's trouble while others cited later tax-free events this year in Florida and Texas. The results, together with soft vehicle sales posted last week, point to another flat retail sales report on Monday.
