Chain Store Sales
Definition
Monthly sales volumes from individual department, chain, discount, and apparel stores are usually reported on the first Thursday of each month. Chain store sales correspond with roughly 10 percent of retail sales. Chain store sales are an indicator of retail sales and consumer spending trends.  Why Investors Care

Highlights
Chain stores posted mixed results in May but still well up from a very weak April that was hurt by the Easter calendar shift and also by bad weather. Weather in May proved better but couldn't fire up much action in the retail sector. Comments included low traffic and once again special weakness in home-goods categories. The results point to modest readings in non-auto, non-gasoline categories for Wednesday's big retail sales report.
