Chain Store Sales
Definition
Monthly sales volumes from individual department, chain, discount, and apparel stores are usually reported on the first Thursday of each month. Chain store sales correspond with roughly 10 percent of retail sales. Chain store sales are an indicator of retail sales and consumer spending trends.  Why Investors Care

Highlights
Though retailers warned that strength in March was tied to an early Easter, April's sales proved surprisingly soft with an unusual number cutting estimates following the results. The Easter calendar effect pulled sales from April and into March, but April was also hit by heavy weather in the first two weeks of the month. High gas prices, at $3 by month end, also hurt. Today's results were a disappointment for retailers and may weigh on expectations for tomorrow's retail trade data. Share prices of retailers were mostly steady in early trading.
