Chain Store Sales
Definition
Monthly sales volumes from individual department, chain, discount, and apparel stores are usually reported on the first Thursday of each month. Chain store sales correspond with roughly 10 percent of retail sales. Chain store sales are an indicator of retail sales and consumer spending trends.  Why Investors Care

Highlights
Holiday sales proved to be respectable in December, helped by a very late rush ahead of Christmas and strong gift card redemption the week after. On average, chain stores reported a total sales gain of about 8 percent, in line with recent months but down from earlier in the year. The same-store tally was a little weaker at about 2 percent. Many chains said warm weather hurt sales of seasonal items and that comparisons were hurt by strong post-hurricane demand last year around the Gulf. Together with yesterday's solid showing in vehicle sales, December is sizing up to be a solid but still no more than moderate month for retail sales. The Commerce Department will release retail trade data at mid-month.
