Will This Diet Device Be a Blockbuster?

The latest Bloomberg Businessweek describes an implantable device called Abiliti that could be a boon for people who are overweight. It sends electrical pulses to the stomach and makes people feel full.

The company making this, IntraPace, is privately held, but investors include Boston Scientific ( BSX ) and Johnson & Johnson ( JNJ ).

It would be too early to call this so-called "gastric pacemaker" the cure for obesity. While approved in Europe, Alibiti doesn't yet have any long-term studies available that show how well it works.
