Shorts Maintain Historical Advantage Trading Nordstrom in Wake of Earnings-Driven After-Hours Moves

Nordstrom ( JWN ) is due with its Q4 results in tonight's after-hours session, and analysts polled by Capital IQ expect the company to report a profit of $1.34 per on revenue of $3.64 billion.

JWN shows a mixed performance between its extended-hours action and the next day's regular session, cutting back or reversing its evening performance in next-day trade for 14 of its last 28 earnings releases and extending its move in 13 quarters.

Looking deeper into the data, the stock has reacted to earnings news with gains in 10 quarters, extending that move six times, or 60% of the time. On the bearish side, the stock has reacted to earnings news with downward share moves 18 times, extending that move eight times. In one other event no trades were recorded in the extended-hours followed by a next-day decline.

On Nov. 14, 2013, JWN dropped 0.8% in night trade after beating on Q3 EPS, meeting on revenue, and setting in-line guidance. The stock edged slightly lower the next day, closing the Nov. 15 regular session down 1%.

On Aug. 15, 2013, JWN declined 2.4% in after-hours trade after beating Q2 expectations but also cutting its full year earnings view below the Street. The stock fell further the next day, closing the Aug. 16 regular session down 4.8%.
