Norway's Statnett Seeks Approval For Power Cable To Denmark
LONDON -(Dow Jones)- Norway's power transmission operator Statnett Monday said
it is seeking approval from the country's energy directorate NVE to build a new
power connection to Denmark.
The cable, called Skagerrak 4, or SK4, would have a transmission capacity of
400 megawatts and be completed by 2014. It is a joint venture between Statnett
and Danish power grid operator Energinet.
Statnett's Chief Executive Auke Lont said the connection will help strengthen
supply security in Norway and Denmark and said Norwegian consumers will benefit
from tariff reductions. Increased exchange capacity with Norway will give
Denmark the opportunity to export surplus electricity to Norway when it is
windy, or import hydroelectric power from Norway when it is less windy, helping
reduce reliance on coal fired power, Statnett said.
The 240-kilometer subsea connection would run from Tjele in Denmark to
Kristiansand in Norway. A further 90 kilometers will run onshore Denmark. It is
expected to cost more than 3 billion Norwegian kroner ($528 million) of which
Norway would shoulder NOK1.3 billion.
