India Regulator: To Set Radio Bandwidth Guidelines By Year End
NEW DELHI -(Dow Jones)- India's telecom regulator expects to submit before the
end of 2009 its recommendations on the criteria for allocating mobile services
radio bandwidth.
The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India is currently consulting industry
participants and will take a little while to finalize its recommendations,
Chairman J. S. Sarma told reporters Monday.
He didn't give a timeframe.
Currently, second-generation radio bandwidth is allocated on the basis of the
number of subscribers a company has. But there is increasing demand for second
generation spectrum to be auctioned--as is the case for third generation
bandwidth.
On whether TRAI will recommend capping charges for short-text messaging
service, or SMS, Sarma said: "We are still examining (the matter). There is
nothing specific at this stage."
