India Trade Minister: October Exports Down 6.6% On Year

NEW DELHI -(Dow Jones)- India's merchandise exports fell at a slower pace in October than previous months as global demand is picking up, the federal commerce and industry minister said Friday.

Exports slipped 6.6% from a year earlier in October, Anand Sharma said at a news conference. He didn't give the actual export numbers.

India's merchandise exports had decreased 13.8% from a year earlier in September to $13.60 billion. In August, exports had declined 19.4% as a deep global downturn hit demand.

However, local consumption and global demand are now improving and exports are likely to pick up in the January-March period, Sharma said.
