China: Taiwan Trial TD-SCDMA Network To Help Chinese Technology
BEIJING -(Dow Jones)- A trial network in Taipei that runs on Chinese-developed
advanced mobile phone technology will help in developing the local technology
standard, China's industry ministry said Wednesday.
In a statement on its Web site, the Ministry of Industry and Information
Technology said the trial network will help in exploring how to use the Chinese
standard - Time Division Synchronous Code Division Multiple Access - with the
more widely used Wideband CDMA technology.
It will also offer opportunities to expand the market for TD-SCDMA and for
cooperation with Taiwanese companies in developing chips and handsets running on
TD-SCDMA, according to a statement on the ministry's Web site.
The statement said the first video-phone call made using the trial network by
Taiwan carrier VIBO Telecom Inc. took place Monday. It added there are now more
than 200 TD-SCDMA terminal models and shipment of TD-SCDMA chips has exceeded 5
million units.
