Indonesia Official: Considering Dropping Probe On Anti-Graft
Leaders
JAKARTA -(Dow Jones)- Indonesian state prosecutors will consider whether to
drop charges of extortion and abuse of power against two anti-graft leaders,
Attorney-General Herman Supandji said Tuesday.
Supandji told reporters that it could take over two weeks for the prosecutors
to come to a decision.
"We can't decide it instantly," Supandji said.
President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said Monday that it would be better for the
police and state prosecutors not to continue the probe against Chandra Hamzah
and Bibit Samad Rianto.
Yudhoyono said, however, that it isn't within his powers to halt the
investigation, a statement that has drawn criticism for his failure to take a
clear stand on the issue.
The case came under public scrutiny after the Constitutional Court recently
played back recordings of wiretapped telephone conversations that apparently
indicated efforts to fabricate charges against Hamzah and Rianto.
