UK Top Science Bodies Call For Action To Cut Global Emissions
LONDON -(Dow Jones)- The impact on climate and civilization could be severe
without coordinated international action on cutting greenhouse gas emissions,
the U.K.'s top science bodies said Tuesday.
Without substantial global reductions of greenhouse gas emissions more
droughts, floods and species loss, rising seas and displaced human populations
are likely, the U.K.'s Met Office, the Natural Environment Research Council and
the Royal Society said in a statement.
The evidence for dangerous, long-term and potentially irreversible climate
change has strengthened significantly since the 2007 Intergovernmental Panel on
Climate Change Assessment, the statement added.
"As three of the U.K.'s leading scientific organizations involving most of the
U.K. scientists working on climate change, we cannot emphasize enough the body
of scientific evidence that underpins the call for action now, and we reinforce
our commitment to ensuring that world leaders continue to have access to the
best possible science," the statement said.
More than 190 countries are preparing to meet in Copenhagen to hammer out an
agreement to cut greenhouse gas emissions, aimed at limiting a rise in global
temperatures and preventing dangerous climate change.
"The scientific evidence which underpins calls for action at Copenhagen is
very strong," the scientists said.
