World Bank Wants Zambia To Increase Power Tariffs - Report
DOW JONES NEWSWIRES
The World Bank wants Zambia to increase its electricity tariffs in order to
profitably run its power utility firm, the Zambia Electricity Supply Corp.,
according to a report Saturday in the Post Newspaper.
The privately-owned daily quoted World Bank representative Vivien Foster as
saying that hidden costs of power utilities are high due to under pricing by
most African countries like Zambia.
Zambia, Africa's largest copper producer, has been prone to power blackouts in
the past couple of years.
"Zambia's unaccounted losses in the power sector are very minimal whilst under
pricing is negatively affecting its percentage of revenues ... Zambia charges
about three cents whilst other countries like Chad charge about 30 cents per
kilowatt," she was quoted as saying.
Copper mines consume more than 60% of Zambia's generated power
