Workers of Congo’s largest state diamond miner Miniere de Bakwange, or
MIBA, held demonstrations in the capital Kinshasa and eastern Congo on Wednesday
to press the government to release at least $20 million to recapitalize the
cash-strapped miner, U.N.-backed Radio Okapi reported Thursday.
Radio Okapi reported that the miners were joined by their families and
demanded that the government recapitalize the company to enable it to meet its
obligations to workers and improve their conditions.
Okapi quoted Jack Ngandu Kayembe, an MIBA executive, as saying that the
company’s financial woes continue to deepen and called for urgent
government intervention.
