Uruguay Eyes Gas From Chile LNG Regasification Plant -Report
SANTIAGO -(Dow Jones)- Uruguay is interested in buying gas from Chile's new
liquified natural gas regasification plant and has approached state oil and gas
company Empresa Nacional del Petroleo to discuss the feasibility of such a deal,
La Tercera newspaper reported.
After Argentina cut off its natural gas exports to Chile a few years ago to
meet its domestic demand, the government in joint ventures with private
companies built a regasification plant that recently came on line. Another plant
is being built in the mining-intensive northern region of the country.
"Uruguay has openly expressed its interest in buying gas from us. We've had
several conversations with that country's state oil company Ancap," the
newspaper quoted Rodrigo Azocar, the company's chief executive, as saying in an
interview.
Empresa Nacional del Petroleo is known locally as Enap.
Before Chile can export gas to Uruguay, Argentina would have to change its
customs norms to allow the gas to be exported as Argentina lies in the path of
transit.
Chile recently modified its customs regulations to allow for natural gas
exports to Argentina.
