Peru's Garcia Says To Push For Japan Free-Trade Pact
LIMA -(Dow Jones)- President Alan Garcia, in Japan on a state visit, said he
will push for Peru and Japan to sign a free-trade pact.
Garcia's office said in a statement on Tuesday that Garcia had met with
Japan's Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama in Tokyo.
"We are going to push for a free trade agreement and for other treaties,"
Garcia said following the meeting.
Peru and Japan have held a series of negotiating sessions, although a high-
level Peruvian government negotiator complained this week publicly that Japan
wasn't ready to open its market.
Peru, which already has signed trade deals with the U.S., Canada and China,
has also been negotiating free-trade pacts with Thailand and South Korea.
Garcia is visiting Japan and South Korea before heading to Singapore for a
summit of the APEC forum.
