WASHINGTON -(Dow Jones)- Hospira Inc. (HSP) is recalling certain dietary
supplements and anesthesia products because some may contain stainless steel
particles that could restrict blood flow and lead to heart attacks or death.
Hospira said it's recalling 85 lots of its fat emulsion products Liposyn, used
in infants and others who are unable to get fat in their diet, according to a
press release the U.S. Food and Drug Administration posted on its Web site. The
press release is from Hospira, not the FDA.
Hospira, based in Lake Forest, Ill., is also recalling certain lots of
injectable propofol, which is used to sedate patients.
Hospira said it hasn't received any reports of adverse events associated with
people who have taken the products, which were distributed between July and
October. "Hospira is undertaking this recall in consideration of the potential
for safety issues if the products are administered to patients," the company
said.
The stainless steel particles got into the products via the manufacturing
process and Hospira said it has corrected the problem. Anyone who experiences
adverse reactions should report the issue to the FDA by phone at 1-800-FDA-1088.
