Brazilian Real Strengthens, Trading Below BRL1.7 To The Dollar

RIO DE JANEIRO -(Dow Jones)- The Brazilian real was stronger in the afternoon trading session Monday, and dipped below BRL1.7000 to the US dollar for only the second time this year.

At 1600 GMT, the real was at BRL1.6988 in trading on the Brazilian Mercantile and Futures Exchange, or BM&F, stronger than Friday's close at BRL1.713.

The real opened at BRL1.708 to the dollar Monday, boosted by forecasts of higher gross domestic product growth in Brazil.

A Brazil central bank weekly survey raised its forecast for 2010 GDP to a 4.83% increase from 4.8% growth previously.
