GM Europe CFO: Spain Plant Remains Key For European StrategyMADRID -(Dow Jones)- General Motors Co.'s Spanish factory will continue to play a key role in the company's future strategy in Europe, GM Europe Vice President and Chief Financial Officer Enrico Digirolamo said Wednesday. In an emailed statement, Digirolamo said: "The Figueruelas plant in Zaragoza, Spain has been an integral part of GM for the last 27 years and will be a key operation for GM's future European strategy." The comment comes less than a day after the U.S. carmaker abandoned a plan to sell its Adam Opel GmbH unit to a consortium led by Austrian-Canadian auto parts maker Magna International Inc. (MGA). GM has yet to detail its new plans for the European operations. Opel employs around 7,500 workers at a plant in Zaragoza, northern Spain. In 2008, 423,000 Opel cars were built at the plant. -By Christopher Bjork, Dow Jones Newswires, +34 91 395 81 23, christopher.bjork@dowjones.com (END) Dow Jones Newswires 11-04-091235ET Copyright (c) 2009 Dow Jones & Company, Inc. |
