2nd UPDATE: T-Mobile USA Seeing Service Outages

(Adds widespread complaints on various Web sites)

NEW YORK -(Dow Jones)- T-Mobile USA said late Tuesday that some of its customers were experiencing intermittent voice and data service outages.

The carrier, fresh from dealing with a service outage that temporarily wiped out the personal data of its SideKick subscribers, said it was working on fixing the problem.

T-Mobile's problems appeared to be widespread, according to complaints on various Web sites. The carrier has been working on the problem. As of 9:00 PM ET, T-Mobile said that roughly 5% of its customers were affected. It is unclear how many customers were affected when the problems began around 5:30 PM ET.

"We're making good progress restoring voice and messaging service to affected customers," said a T-Mobile spokesman.

The carrier, a unit of Deutsche Telekom AG (DT), has struggled with perceptions of its network and with subscriber growth. T-Mobile recently unveiled a number of new pricing plans in an effort to turn the business around.

But the latest outage threatens to re-ignite concerns stoked by the SideKick incident, in which Microsoft Corp. (MSFT) accidentally lost the SideKick data stored in its servers. The company and its SideKick unit, Danger, later restored the data, but continues to suffer a public black eye.
