Ford Europe Sep Vehicle Sales +12.3% On Year; Market Downturn
Looms
FRANKFURT -(Dow Jones)- Ford Motor Co.'s (F) European division said Monday
that sales were up 12.3% on the year in September at 152,600 vehicles, with the
company's market share rising to 10.1%, but added that the outlook for 2010
remains uncertain, as scrapping incentives in several countries expired.
"It is clear that there is still a need for government intervention in Europe
to help bolster the market until demand reaches a more sustainable level," Ford
Europe sales chief Ingvar Sviggum said in a statement.
In the first nine months, Ford's sales in its 19 core European markets were
down 4.5% compared with the same period last year at 1.1 million vehicles.
Thanks mainly to its small Ka and Fiesta models, the U.S. automaker was among
the main beneficiaries of European scrapping incentive schemes to trade in old
gas guzzlers, which revived demand throughout the region in recent months.
