UPDATE: Mousavi: Pressure To Withdraw Vote Cancellation Call
(Adds quote, background.)
TEHRAN (AFP)--Iranian opposition leader Mir Hossein Mousavi said Thursday he
is under pressure to withdraw his demand for the cancellation of the disputed
presidential election, according to his Web site.
"The recent pressure on me aims to make me give up my demand for the election
to be canceled," his Kalameh Web site said.
Mousavi, who lost to incumbent President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in the June 12
vote, has complained of widespread irregularities in what he has branded a "
shameful fraud."
A number of his supporters have been arrested by the authorities, which have
also banned all opposition demonstrations over the election.
Mousavi, a former premier in the post-revolution era, received 34% of the vote
against 63% for Ahmadinejad, according to official results.
Although the authorities have agreed to conduct partial recounts, they have
refused to scrap the results and hold a new election as demanded by Mousavi.
