Iran Lawmakers Urge Arrests After Tehran University Attack
TEHRAN (AFP)--Iranian lawmakers have called for the arrest of people who
attacked Tehran University dormitories following Iran's disputed presidential
poll, the ISNA news agency said on Monday.
"The lawmakers have informed parliament speaker Ali Larijani of the situation
and asked for the damages to be repaired...for arrested students to be released
and those who carried out this unfortunate events to be arrested," it reported.
Student Web sites report the university dormitories were attacked late Sunday
by assailants in civilian clothes believed to be members of the Basij Islamist
militia.
"Nobody was killed...but there were people wounded and some students were
arrested," lawmaker Kazem Jalali told AFP after visiting the scene Monday.
He said the students had been shouting slogans against to the re-election of
President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in Friday's poll when "uncontrolled elements burst
into the dormitories and attacked them."
"Some (of the students) were arrested but they are to be released following
our intervention," he said.
