Weekly ETF Fund Flows: Equities Lead Inflows

By
A A A

Equities funds dominated U.S.-listed ETF asset inflows in the past week, with funds like the SPDR S&P 500 (NYSEArca:SPY) and the Vanguard S&P 500 (NYSEArca:VOO) ranking among the most popular strategies.

SPY attracted a net of nearly $3 billion in the past five days ended Thursday, May 16, while VOO raked in $211 million, according to data compiled by IndexUniverse.

In all, investors poured a net of $4.76 billion into U.S. equities funds and $2.96 billion into international equities ETFs in the five-day period, pushing total U.S.-listed ETF assets to a new high of $1.530 trillion.

The demand for equities exposure through ETFs came as the S&P 500 rallied 1.46 percent to close Thursday at 1,650.47, and at one point in the week, hit a new intraday record high of 1,661.49.

On the international front, Japan-focused funds again stood out, with the WisdomTree Japan Hedged Equity ETF (NYSEArca:DXJ) and the iShares MSCI Japan Index Fund (NYSEArca:EWJ) coming in at Nos. 2 and 3, respectively, in the weekly ranking of top creations.

DXJ and EWJ continue to benefit from investor focus on Japan's economic recovery story. The two funds have, in fact, attracted $1 out of every $4 invested in U.S.-listed ETFs in the past six weeks after ranking among the most popular ETFs in the first quarter.

DXJ, in particular, has resonated with investors due to its currency hedge feature, and is now nearing $10 billion in assets, having now attracted some $7 billion year-to-date.

On the flip side, the SPDR Gold Shares (NYSEArca:GLD) had another tough week, with net outflows of $554 million, as gold prices slid nearly 5 percent. The largest gold bullion ETF, and the third-largest U.S.-listed ETF, has now bled some $15.1 billion since the beginning of the year.

In all, commodities ETFs were net losers in the past five days, facing net outflows of $765 million. U.S. fixed-income ETFs were also unpopular-investors yanked more than $500 million from the asset class this past week.
