Weekly ETF Fund Flows: Debt Shines

By
A A A

Many of last week's most popular ETFs were focused on debt markets, as investor worries about slowing economic growth led them to the relative safety of the bond markets.

While the SPDR S&P 500 ETF (NYSEArca:SPY) was the single most popular fund in the trading day ended May 3, the No. 2 fund on IndexUniverse's "Top 10 Weekly Creations" list was the iShares Barclays 1-3 Year Treasury Bond Fund (NYSEArca:SHY). SPY hauled in $928.7 million while SHY added $599.4 million.

Five other debt funds populated the top 10 list. Those ETFs are their inflows were:

  • iShares Barclays 3-7 Year Treasury Bond  Fund (NYSEArca:IEI), $599.0 million
  • ProShares Ultra 7-10 Year Treasury ETF (NYSEArca:UST), $463.3 million
  • SPDR Barclays Capital High Yield Bond ETF (NYSEArca:JNK), $292.4 million
  • iShares Barclays 1-3 Year Credit Bond Fund (NYSEArca:CSJ), $230.4 million
  • iShares Barclays 7-10 Year Treasury Bond Fund (NYSEArca:$168.6 million

Those flows into the bond market continued on Friday after the U.S. government reported that the economy generated just 115,000 new non-farm jobs in April - well below expectations of 168,000 among economists. The jobs number fueled views the economy is slowing, which could hurt corporate profits and stock-market performance.

Total inflows into U.S. bond funds were $2.87 billion, according to data compiled by IndexUniverse.

In a sign investors were bracing for volatility, the iPath S&P 500 VIX Short-Term Futures ETN (NYSEArca:VXX) pulled in $179.3 million in new investments - a more than 10 jump in assets.  VXX and products like it are designed to gain in value when the stock market sells off sharply.

Redemptions

The least popular ETF during the week of trade was the iShares Russell 2000 Index Fund (NYSEArca:IWM). Investors pulled $931.5 million out of the popular small-cap equities fund.

They also yanked $436.7 million out of the iShares S&P 500 Index Fund (NYSEArca:IVV) and $417.7 million out of SPDR Gold Shares (NYSEArca:GLD), the physical bullion ETF.
