Walmart launches iPad pre-sales

Shortly after announcing that it would sell Apple 's ( AAPL ) iPad in its brick-and-mortar outlets, Walmart Stores ( WMT ) has kicked off pre-orders for the tablet on its website.

The retailing giant will not ship iPads to customers' homes, though - they'll have to go to a Walmart store to pick up tablets they reserve online.

Walmart and Target ( TGT ) are the only mass-market retailers to offer Apple's popular iPad; by selling the device in their stores, they may entice tech-savvy shoppers to visit. It remains to be seen, however, whether the discount chains' decision to sell Apple devices will encourage their value-conscious customers to spend more.

Apple stands to benefit from the partnership, too: By selling iPads through mass-market chains, it can expose customers who live far from Apple Stores - of which there are fewer than 250 in the nation - to the flashy tablet.

Walmart indicated that the device would be offered at 2,300 of its outlets by mid-November - just in time for the holiday shopping season. With holiday spending forecast by the International Council of Shopping Centers to rise just 2.3 percent this year, Walmart and Apple may be counting on their tie-up to provide a boost in sales.
