(RTTNews.com) - Volkswagen's long-awaited Golf R is now on display at the 2014 North American International Auto Show in Detroit.
With an estimated 290 horsepower making it one of the world's most powerful four-cylinder engines, VW is hoping its newest hatch can boost sluggish
sales in the U.S.
The Golf R's turbocharged engine gets from Zero to 62 mph in just 4.9 seconds, according to a press release from the company.
A redesigned interior features a 5.8-inch navigation touchscreen with proximity sensors: as a finger is moved near the screen, the system automatically switches to input mode.
Also in Detroit yesterday, VW showed off its e-Golf electric vehicle.
VW's first U.S. electric vehicle is equipped with a lithium-ion battery and energy-efficient LED lights. e-Golf will have a driving range of between 70 and 90 miles on a full charge.
VW says the Golf R will be in showrooms early in 2015, while the electric car will be available late 2014.
Prof. Dr. Martin Winterkorn says VW will invest over $7 billion in North America over the next five years. Plans include a mid-size SUV for the U.S.
He stated that development work on the seven-seater had already begun and that the US market launch was scheduled for 2016.
"We have set our goal: Volkswagen Group of America aims to sell one million Volkswagen and Audi cars per year in the US by 2018. We are taking up the challenge - with confidence, total commitment and the necessary staying power," Winterkorn said.
