U.S. stock futures were only slightly higher in pre-market trade on Friday after a week of strong gains - albeit amid lighter than usual trading around the holidays. The S&P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average both closed at record highs yesterday.

With no major data due out today, investors were looking for cues elsewhere. In equities, aircraft manufacturer Textron ( TXT ) said it will buy Beech Holdings - the maker of business, special mission, light attack and trainer aircraft - for $1.4 billion in cash. TXT was down 1% after having traded up nearly 5% earlier in pre-market trade.

WPCS International ( WPCS ) surged over 91% after launching a public beta version of its trading platform for Bitcoin traders with access to market data and order execution on the five most popular Bitcoin exchanges in one application.

Also, shipping stocks including Navios Maritime ( NM ), Genco Shipping ( GNK ), Eagle Bulk Shipping ( EGLE ), DryShips (DRYS) and FreeSeas (FREE) traded sharply higher amid optimism that the economic recovery will lead to more trade.
