US stocks were poised to open down on Monday as European leaders this week will consider more sanctions against Russia over its role in the Ukraine crisis, possibly putting a damper on economic growth.

In equities, Reynolds America ( RAI ), which last week said it will acquire Lorillard ( LO ) for $27.4 billion, was lower over 2% in recent pre-market trade after a Florida jury ordered the company to pay $23.6 billion to the widow of a longtime smoker who died of lung cancer. EMC ( EMC ) was higher nearly 5% before the bell amid lobbying by Elliot Management to break up the company.

In economic data out this week, Tuesday will bring the June consumer price index, seen slowing down to a 0.3% gain from a 0.4% gain in May. There will also be a number of housing data points out, including the FHFA house price index for May and existing home sales for June out on Tuesday and the new home sales figures for June out on Thursday.
