U.S. weekly initial jobless claims for the week ended August 16 are due for release on Thursday at 8:30 a.m. ET and are expected feature a decrease of 11,000 to 300,000 (consensus range 300,000 to 315,000) as claims remain lean after the gyrations seen over the past three weeks. The 21,000 U.S. initial claims bounce to 311,000 in the second week of August more than reversed the big 13,000 drop to 290,000 (was 289,000) at the start of August. That still leaves the measure well above the 279,000 mid-July cycle low.
