Update: Top unusual option activity

As of today's close, here are the top 10 names showing unusual option activity on tradeMONSTER's LiveAction data system.

Hatteras Financial (HTS): Option volume 5,438 percent above average. Call activity surged as investors looked to reap the company's cash dividend.

Vanguard Total Stock Market Index Fund (VTI): Option volume 2,315 percent above average. Investors bought 3,000 December 72 calls for $1.05 to $1.10, looking for upside. VTI fell 0.55 percent to $66.87.

L-3 Communications (LLL): Option volume 1,345 percent above average. Investors buy the August 90 calls and the July 90 calls, looking for upside. LLL rose 3.83 percent to $86.21.

Pain Therapeutics (PTIE): Option volume 1,298 percent above average. Investors bought the July 8 puts, looking for downside. PTIE fell 5.41 percent to $8.75.

Thompson Creek (TC): Option volume 1,197 percent above average. Investors sold about 9,700 September 10 puts for $0.85, looking for the stock to hold its ground. TC fell 1.02 percent to $9.74.

Rounding out the rest of the top 10 are:

  • Health Net (HNT): Option volume 1,146 percent above average.
  • Amylin Pharmaceuticals (AMLN): Option volume 1,124 percent above average.
  • QEP Resources (QEP): Option volume 1,101 percent above average.
  • Hansen Natural (HANS): Option volume 1,076 percent above average.
  • FMC Technologies (FTI): Option volume 983 percent above average.
